Osteoporosis on X-ray

An x-ray is a powerful and relatively inexpensive tool for assessing bony structures. We can identify a number of key elements in these labeled x-rays. Besides the anatomic structures though, we can also appreciate the healthy degree of bone density in both images ☝️ . Osteoporosis refers to bone with decreased density. On x-ray, osteoporosis can appear porous, with areas of black shading (lucency) where normal white shading (opacity) should be present. This is always important to note on any x-ray, as osteoporosis can predispose to fractures in the setting of a trauma or fall 😁. Look out for a couple upcoming posts focusing on bone health as well as osteoporosis prevention! 📝 . 📷: wikiradiography.com
